Ryanair has announced a significant update to its boarding procedures, transitioning entirely to digital boarding passes across all its flights. This policy change aims to streamline the travel experience for passengers while reducing operational costs for the airline.
What the New Digital Boarding Policy Entails
Under the new system, passengers will receive their boarding passes directly within the Ryanair app after completing online check-in. The airline has emphasised that this shift is designed to make travel "quicker, easier, and more environmentally friendly." A Ryanair representative explained in a recent social media video that over 90% of customers already use digital passes, meaning the adjustment will be minimal for most travellers.
How to Access Your Digital Boarding Pass
Passengers must check in online before arriving at the airport, either through the Ryanair app or the official website. If check-in is done via the website, the app is still required to access the digital boarding pass. Once checked in, the pass will appear automatically in the app and remain available even when the device is offline. Travellers simply need to present their digital pass at security checkpoints and boarding gates.
Provisions for Groups and Exceptions
The policy applies equally to group bookings and individual travellers. For groups booked directly through Ryanair's groups department, the booking owner must check in first, after which each member can access their own pass using booking details. Ryanair has also addressed concerns about smartphone issues: if a passenger lacks a smartphone or their device battery dies, they can obtain a free printed boarding pass at the airport check-in desk or boarding gate, provided they have checked in online beforehand.
Benefits and Potential Savings
Ryanair highlights that digital boarding passes lower airport costs, with savings potentially passed on to customers through reduced fares. The airline continues to email check-in reminders before flights but warns that passengers who arrive at the airport without prior online check-in will still incur the standard airport check-in fee.
This move aligns with broader industry trends toward digitalisation, offering a more efficient and eco-friendly alternative to traditional paper tickets while maintaining flexibility for all passenger needs.
