Royal Mail Warns of Delays Across 100+ Postcodes Due to Storms and Sickness
Royal Mail has issued a stark warning regarding potential service delays impacting more than 100 postcodes across the United Kingdom. The postal giant attributes these disruptions to a combination of severe weather conditions and an unusually high rate of staff sickness, which have collectively strained delivery operations.
Weather and Workforce Challenges Disrupt Postal Services
A spokesperson for Royal Mail confirmed that adverse weather, including storms Goretti, Ingrid, and Chandra in January, alongside higher-than-usual sick absence among employees, has led to short-term disruptions on specific routes. The company has identified 38 delivery offices, covering approximately 100 postcodes, as being most affected by these slower services.
"We want to reassure customers that the vast majority of mail is delivered as planned and understand how frustrating it is when post does not arrive as expected," the firm stated. It further emphasised that, where delays do occur, extra support will be mobilised to restore deliveries as swiftly as possible.
Reports of Parcel Prioritisation and Backlogs
Meanwhile, a recent BBC investigation has uncovered that some letters are being held in delivery offices for weeks, causing recipients to miss critical correspondence such as appointment notices and bank statements. Citing anonymous postal workers, the report alleges that parcels are being prioritised over letters in certain depots, even for first-class mail, with broader staff shortages exacerbating service issues.
It is understood that Royal Mail may clear parcels first if they accumulate rapidly and obstruct walkways in delivery offices. The company has noted a significant increase in parcel volumes due to the ongoing growth of online shopping, while the number of addressed letters passing through its network continues to decline.
Regulatory Changes and Union Disputes
Royal Mail, which serves nearly two million postcodes and is mandated to deliver mail six days a week, aims to maintain timely deliveries for both letters and parcels. Last year, regulator Ofcom approved changes allowing Royal Mail to scrap second-class letter deliveries on Saturdays and shift to an every-other-weekday service.
The company launched these modifications as a pilot across 35 delivery offices but has not yet expanded them nationwide to all 1,200 sites. This delay stems from an inability to reach an agreement with the Communication Workers Union, with the parties currently engaged in a month-long dispute resolution process to address workforce impacts from the overhaul.
