Motorhome and Campervan Owners Face New Parking Restrictions and Charges
New Parking Restrictions Hit Motorhome and Campervan Owners

Motorhome and campervan owners are increasingly encountering new parking restrictions and charges as local councils respond to a surge in staycation travel. The lack of uniform regulations across the UK is causing confusion among drivers, according to Mark Sheppard, motorhome and campervan insurance specialist at Safeguard.

Confusing Patchwork of Local Rules

Sheppard told GB News that one of the most significant hurdles for owners is the absence of a national standard. “Regulations and restrictions actually change. There's not one national rule for it. It tends to be different in different areas, which is the confusing part for motorhome and campervan owners,” he said.

Councils in popular tourist destinations are feeling pressure from local residents frustrated by the impact of larger vehicles. “When you've got these larger vehicles in popular areas, local residents can become frustrated by the impact they have,” Sheppard noted, as reported by Birmingham Live. “I think councils have probably felt they've had to do something, particularly in areas that see a large influx of visitors during the summer season.”

Potential Consequences for Tourism

Sheppard warned that imposing higher charges and more restrictions could deter visitors. “If you start imposing higher charges and more restrictions on vehicle owners just because of the type of vehicle they have, it's probably going to dissuade people from going there. You might see that there are more cons than pros,” he said.

He emphasised the importance of understanding local signage before travelling. “The key thing for owners is making sure they understand local restrictions and signage before they travel. There needs to be more readily available information on hotspots and areas people are travelling to. There are often dedicated areas for motorhomes and campervans, so it's about making sure people are aware of where they can and can't stay,” Sheppard added.

Changing Demographics of Motorhome Owners

The demographics of motorhome holidaymakers have shifted significantly. “Historically, motorhomes were seen as something for retirees, but that's now changed. With mobile working and the fact people don't have to go into an office five days a week, they're travelling around the UK and Europe while still working,” Sheppard said. He called for longer-term solutions from local authorities rather than reactive measures when visitor numbers spike.

Case Study: North Yorkshire Coast Ban

A permanent overnight parking ban for campervans and motorhomes has been introduced along the North Yorkshire coast after councillors voted to approve the measure. Richard Lancaster, 58, believes van owners are being unfairly blamed for the actions of all visitors. “Tourists are coming in their cars, they're racking barbecues up, they're tenting in the castle grounds, they're leaving litter all over,” he said. He described the area as “stunning” but lamented that “people are just abusing it and we're getting blamed for it on an everyday basis.”
