Metro passengers on the Tyne and Wear network are facing severe disruption on Wednesday morning after a failed engineering vehicle forced the suspension of services on a significant section of the line. The suspension, affecting routes between Heworth and South Shields and between Heworth and South Hylton, was confirmed by operator Nexus at approximately 4:51 am.
What Caused the Suspension?
According to Nexus, the disruption is due to a failed engineering vehicle that has blocked the tracks. This has brought all Metro services south of the River Tyne to a halt, leaving passengers stranded and seeking alternative travel options.
Impact on Passengers and Alternative Travel
The suspension has caused major delays for commuters and early-morning travelers. To mitigate the disruption, Nexus has arranged for Metro tickets to be accepted on bus services operated by Stagecoach and Go North East across the affected areas. Passengers are advised to use these bus services as an alternative to complete their journeys.
Nexus has not yet provided an estimated time for when services will resume, and passengers are urged to check for real-time updates before traveling.
