May Bank Holiday Rail Chaos: Millions Face Disruption
May Bank Holiday Rail Chaos: Millions Disrupted

Millions of rail passengers across the UK are set to face significant disruption as extensive Network Rail engineering works are scheduled over both May bank holiday weekends. The works, which aim to deliver best value and minimise overall disruption according to Network Rail, will nonetheless cause major inconveniences for travellers.

East Coast Main Line Closures

The East Coast Main Line will experience closures in North Yorkshire, leading to extended journey times between Newcastle and London King's Cross by nearly two hours. This will affect both the early May and late May bank holiday weekends, with repeated issues along this key route.

Liverpool Lime Street and London Charing Cross

Liverpool’s main station, Lime Street, will be fully closed on the first bank holiday Sunday and Monday, causing severe disruption for passengers in the North West. London's Charing Cross will also close for the early May weekend, adding to the travel woes in the capital.

Further Disruption in Late May

In addition to the East Coast Main Line issues, the main England-Wales rail link through the Severn Tunnel will be closed until 8 June. The Thameslink north-south route through London will also face closures, compounding the disruption for passengers travelling across the country.

Network Rail stated that scheduling the work over bank holidays helps to minimise overall disruption and deliver best value, despite the inconvenience to passengers. Passengers are advised to check their journeys in advance and allow extra time for travel.
