Manchester Airport has issued guidance for families flying this summer, warning that children's 'squishy' toys could be confiscated under strict security rules. The airport expects more than 5.7 million passengers between July 17 and September 1, with over 120,000 per day, following a record June of 3 million passengers.
Security: Liquid Rules Still Apply
Despite new CT scanners, the 100ml liquid limit remains. Anything pourable or spreadable at room temperature counts as a liquid, including squishy toys, which must go in hold luggage. The new scanners mean passengers no longer need to remove liquids or electronics from bags, speeding up security.
Tram Disruption Until August 2
Major tram repairs mean no trams run through Manchester city centre. Altrincham, Eccles, and Trafford Park lines are suspended; East Didsbury and Airport lines terminate at Firswood with bus replacements. Trams run on Exchange Square-Rochdale, Bury-Piccadilly, and Piccadilly-Ashton-under-Lyne. Plan journeys accordingly.
Terminal 2 Transformation
The £1.3 billion transformation of Terminal 2 is nearly complete. New features include the Boutique Mall with luxury retailers like Coach, Reiss, Jo Malone, and Tom Ford, plus The Executive lounge. The Great Northern Market offers pizza, Greek food, and more. Terminal 3's Sporting Chance bar has 500+ seats. Terminal 3 expansion continues using space from the closed Terminal 1.
Passenger Tips from Airport Director
Jennifer Byrne-Smith, Director of Customer Operations, said: 'The summer holidays are like the World Cup to us. We've improved car parks, drop-offs, and Terminal 2. Pack smart: if you don't check a hold bag, you can get to security in minutes. Plan your journey due to tram works.'
