M53 Closed by Serious Crash Near Junction 4

A serious crash has closed the M53 with delays expected during the morning rush hour. Merseyside Police were called to Junction 4 at Clatterbridge at around 3:25 am. The M53 is currently closed both ways between J5 (Hooton) and J4 (Bebington) due to the collision.

The force warns: 'Please note that this is likely to be in place for several hours and drivers are advised to monitor traffic services prior to embarking on any journey.' Diversion routes are in place.

All Traffic Released

All trapped traffic has been released. According to National Highways, there are no delays or congestion on approach, though this is likely to build.

Police Appeal for Witnesses

Following the crash at around 3:25 am, Merseyside Police are appealing for witnesses. A spokesperson said: 'Any witnesses with information including dashcam are asked to contact us @MerPolCC or 101 with reference 97 of June 15.'

Southbound Diversion

Road users travelling southbound are advised to follow the hollow diamond diversion symbol visible on local road signs. Leave the M53 southbound at Jct 4. At M53 Jct 4/A5137 roundabout, take the third exit onto B5151 southbound (Mount Road). At B5151/B5133 junction, turn left onto B5133 eastbound (Neston Road). At A41/M53 Jct 5 roundabout, take the third exit to re-join the M53 southbound.

Northbound Diversion

Road users travelling northbound are advised to follow the solid circle diversion symbol visible on local road signs. Leave the M53 northbound at junction 5. At M53 Jct 5/A41 roundabout, take the first exit onto A41 southbound (New Chester Road). At A41/B5133 junction, turn right onto B5133 westbound (Hooton Road). At B5133/B5151 junction, turn right onto B5151 northbound (Birkenhead Road). At M53 Jct 4/A5137 roundabout, take the second exit to re-join the M53 northbound at Jct 4.

Lengthy Closures Expected

National Highways have warned that the M53 is expected to be closed for several hours. A spokesperson said: 'There are currently no delays in the area, however due to the nature of the incident, lengthy closures are expected, extending into the morning peak travel period. If this closure impacts on your planned route, please allow extra journey time. Plan ahead, you may wish to re-route or even delay your journey.'
