M4 Closed Both Ways as Loose Horse Causes Chaos

The M4 motorway was closed in both directions on Tuesday after a loose horse caused significant disruption for commuters. Thames Valley Police and National Highways shut the route between junctions 11 and 14, from Reading to Newbury, citing a “significant safety risk” posed by the animal.

Traffic built up heavily in the area as motorists faced long delays. National Highways confirmed the motorway has since fully reopened, but warned that congestion may persist around Newbury as traffic slowly eases.

In a statement on X, National Highways East said: “Long delays remain in the area but should now start to ease.” The horse was safely moved away from the motorway, according to officials.

Local reports described the animal, black and white in colour, standing on a grass verge next to the motorway’s main barrier, leaning its head onto the fence near the hard shoulder. National Highways traffic officers assisted Thames Valley Police in resolving the incident.

Motorists were advised to expect significant delays while efforts were made to secure the horse. National Highways had triggered a traffic alert for the area, warning of the safety risk.
