KLM Adjusts Flight Schedules Amid Rising Fuel Costs and Regional Uncertainties
KLM Royal Dutch Airlines has announced significant adjustments to its flight operations, reducing services within Europe and extending cancellations to key Middle Eastern destinations. These changes come in response to escalating kerosene prices and ongoing geopolitical tensions affecting fuel supplies.
European Flight Reductions Due to Financial Viability Concerns
The airline confirmed it will operate 80 fewer return flights to and from Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport during the coming month. This represents less than 1% of KLM's total European flight operations for the period. The company emphasized these reductions specifically target routes that have become financially unsustainable due to rising kerosene costs.
"This concerns a limited number of flights within Europe that, due to rising kerosene costs, are currently no longer financially viable to operate," KLM stated on its official website. The airline was careful to clarify that these adjustments do not indicate any kerosene shortage, but rather reflect economic realities affecting specific routes.
Affected passengers will be rebooked onto the next available flights, with KLM noting that destinations like London and Düsseldorf—served multiple times daily—should allow for quick accommodation of disrupted travelers. The airline anticipates a busy May holiday period and is working to ensure passengers can reach their destinations as planned.
International Energy Agency Warns of Impending Jet Fuel Shortages
These operational changes coincide with a stark warning from the International Energy Agency (IEA), which reported in mid-April 2026 that Europe has approximately six weeks' worth of jet fuel remaining. The agency cautioned that shortages could materialize by early June, potentially leading to widespread flight cancellations during the crucial summer travel season.
The fuel supply crisis stems from conflicts in the Middle East that have disrupted shipping through the strategic Strait of Hormuz, blocking vital energy cargoes. This geopolitical situation has created significant uncertainty for airlines monitoring their fuel inventories ahead of peak travel months.
Derren Nathan, head of equity research at Hargreaves Lansdown, commented on the market volatility: "Brent Crude prices have climbed five per cent to over $95 per barrel just days after they fell by about $12 to $85 on Friday on hopes of the resumption of energy cargoes through the Strait of Hormuz."
Nathan further noted: "Further downstream, the crisis is starting to have tangible effects, with several airlines cutting back on less profitable routes and the International Energy Agency warning that European jet fuel supplies could run out by early June."
Extended Middle East Cancellations Through Mid-June
In addition to European adjustments, KLM has extended cancellations for flights to and from Dubai until June 14. The airline explained this decision reflects ongoing uncertainties in the region despite recent reporting about the situation.
"To provide clarity and certainty to travellers scheduled to fly to Dubai in the coming weeks, the cancellations have been extended by one month," KLM stated.
