Heathrow Airport's Mandatory £7 Drop-Off Fee: Avoid Fines Up to £80

London Heathrow Airport has issued a stark reminder to travellers about a compulsory £7 fee for using terminal drop-off zones. Failure to pay this charge can result in an £80 penalty, which is reduced to £40 if settled within 14 days. The airport emphasised this policy on social media, clarifying that it applies specifically to vehicles dropping off passengers on terminal forecourts.

Understanding the Terminal Drop-Off Charge

The drop-off zones are located directly outside each terminal, offering the quickest and most convenient option for passenger drop-offs. However, using these areas incurs a £7 fee that must be paid by midnight the following day. Heathrow advises that payment cannot be made at airport ticket machines or within the drop-off zones themselves, as there are no barriers; the charge is automatically incurred upon entry.

Visitors have two payment options: they can pay for a single drop-off or pre-pay for multiple drop-offs online or over the phone. Prepaid funds are valid for 12 months from the date of purchase, and any unused balance expires after this period. Blue badge holders are eligible for a full 100% discount on the fee.

Alternatives and Enforcement Measures

To avoid the charge, Heathrow recommends using short-stay parking for pick-ups, while free pick-up and drop-off services remain available in Park & Ride car parks. The airport strictly prohibits waiting or picking up in the drop-off areas, and unattended vehicles may be towed. This enforcement aims to maintain traffic flow and safety around the terminals.

Heathrow's Two-Bag Policy for Security Efficiency

In addition to the drop-off fee, Heathrow implements a two-bag policy at security checkpoints to prevent delays. Passengers are allowed only two items of hand baggage through security, each measuring no larger than 56cm x 45cm x 25cm. Handbags and laptop bags count towards this limit, and larger items must be checked in as hold luggage.

The UK Government permits specific electronic items in hand luggage, including hairdryers, straighteners, laptops, tablets, and mobile phones. E-cigarettes must be stored in hand luggage, and all electronic devices should be placed in separate trays during security checks for inspection.

By adhering to these policies, travellers can ensure a smoother experience at one of the world's busiest airports, avoiding unnecessary fines and delays.
