Glasgow launches three Night Bus Hubs to improve late-night travel safety
Glasgow launches Night Bus Hubs for safer late-night travel

Glasgow city centre will introduce three new Night Bus Hubs from Friday, October 23, providing a clearer and safer way for revellers and late-night workers to find their bus after a night out or a late shift. The hubs will operate on Friday and Saturday nights between midnight and 4am, with marshals on hand to assist passengers and make the stops easier to identify.

The initiative aims to encourage more people to use night buses while easing pressure on taxis and private hire vehicles during the busiest hours. The scheme is part of a broader effort to improve the safety of passengers after dark.

Locations of the new Night Bus Hubs

The three hubs will be located at existing bus stops in the city centre, with clear signage and branding to help passengers find them. They will be based at Sauchiehall Street at The Garage, Hope Street at Watt Brothers, and the southern end of Union Street.

The stops are already covered by CCTV and will have marshals present during operating hours. The one-year marshalling pilot is being funded by Let's Go Glasgow and Glasgow City Council. Glasgow currently has 10 night bus services operating from the city centre on Friday and Saturday nights, running between midnight and 4am. Passengers will still be able to use their usual bus stops, with services continuing to call at all other stops along their route.

Support for Glasgow's night-time economy

The hubs have been developed through the City Centre Taskforce, with Glasgow City Council, Let's Go Glasgow, First Bus and McGill's Buses working together on the scheme. Councillor Angus Millar, Convener for City Centre Recovery and Transport, said: "Enhancing night-time transport options are an important part of supporting Glasgow’s night-time economy, and the city centre’s new Night Bus Hubs will help people enjoying a night out or working late to confidently plan their journey and get home more easily."

Sean Murray, Chief Executive of Let's Go Glasgow BID, said having a city centre that feels safe and welcoming after dark was important for local businesses and visitors. He said: "A city centre that feels safe, welcoming and vibrant after dark is good for everyone. This is fundamental to a thriving night-time economy. For the businesses we represent, making sure people can enjoy Glasgow with confidence, and get home easily at the end of the night, really matters."

Night bus fares and free travel

First Bus and McGill's Buses have also revealed that the cost of travelling home is included in the £2 fare cap. Ryan Sorley, Commercial Manager of First Bus in Glasgow, said: "The Night Bus Hubs are a brilliant addition to the city network. Welcoming features and on-street advice will further enhance the experience for customers and make buses the obvious choice for travelling home after a late night in the city."

Graeme McFarlan, Commercial Director at McGill’s Group, also welcomed the scheme, saying clearly marked stops with lighting and CCTV coverage would help passengers feel more confident about using night buses. He added: "With the £2 fare cap now covering McGill’s NightBus services, taking the bus home after a night out or a late shift is even more attractive. The hubs will help raise awareness of the services available, while the lower fare makes them even better value for money."
