At least 27 people have been injured after two trams collided in Düsseldorf, Germany, on Saturday morning. The incident occurred at around 11:30am at the intersection of Berliner Allee and Graf-Adolf-Straße in the Friedrichstadt district.
Fire crews attended the scene, treating the injured and assisting 28 other passengers who were unharmed. Five people are understood to have sustained serious injuries, though none were life-threatening. The two trams carried a total of about 60 passengers.
Local authorities have launched an investigation into the crash. Reports from the Rheinische Post suggest one of the trams may have been on the wrong track, possibly due to a misaligned switch on the rail network.
A spokeswoman for Rheinbahn, the tram network operator, said trams are being diverted over a large area while crews work at the crash site. No technical rescue was necessary, as most passengers freed themselves from the vehicles.
