Panoramic drone footage has revealed the Gateshead flyover demolition in full swing, with the project entering what officials describe as its 'most complex stage'. The video, captured above the A167 flyover, comes as the busy Park Lane roundabout is scheduled to shut at the end of July for the next phase of work.
Park Lane Roundabout Closure
Gateshead Council has announced that the closure will begin on Saturday, July 25, and is expected to last until Friday, August 21. The Five Bridges roundabout is already closed, compounding expected delays. Park Lane connects the A184 Felling Bypass to the A167 over the Tyne Bridge, a key commuter route.
Transport chiefs are urging drivers who usually travel through the town centre to avoid the area. Neil Wilkinson, interim service director for planning and transport, stated: 'This is the most complex and challenging phase of the demolition programme and there will be significant disruption on the road network.'
24/7 Demolition Works
The demolition works at Park Lane will be carried out 24/7 to reopen the junction 'in the shortest possible time'. The project has been deliberately timed during the school holidays to minimise disruption. Wilkinson added: 'Our key message is simple. If you’re not travelling to Gateshead town centre, please avoid travelling through it while Park Lane roundabout is closed.'
Diversion routes are in place to maintain access for residents, businesses, and visitors, but are not intended to carry the usual volume of commuter traffic. Drivers are advised to use the A1, A19, and Tyne Tunnel instead, and to consider public transport, walking, or cycling.
Safety Measures and Community Impact
A series of 40 steel props, each weighing 10 tonnes, has been brought in to prevent the flyover from collapsing during demolition. Despite the disruption, Gateshead Council emphasised that the town remains open for business, with shops, restaurants, and attractions welcoming visitors throughout the closure period. A programme of summer activities and events is planned.
