Millions of UK drivers are unknowingly risking a staggering £1,000 fine and penalty points on their licence by incorrectly using a standard feature found in almost every modern vehicle.
The seemingly innocent function? The car's heated windscreen and rear window. While designed for safety and comfort during colder months, its misuse while the vehicle is in motion constitutes a clear breach of Rule 237 of the UK's Highway Code.
The Hidden Danger in Your Dashboard
According to the Highway Code, drivers must maintain a full view of the road and surroundings at all times. The issue arises because these heated elements can create slight distortions or lines in the glass, potentially obscuring the driver's vision.
"All windows MUST be kept clean and free of obstructions to vision," states the rulebook. Using the heated front or rear screen for longer than necessary to clear the glass is therefore considered a driving offence, as it can be deemed a failure to have proper control of the vehicle and a clear view of the road ahead.
How to Use Your Demister Correctly & Avoid a Fine
This doesn't mean you have to drive with a frosted windshield. The key is to use the feature correctly and safely.
- Clear Before You Gear: Turn on your heated windscreen and rear window several minutes before you set off, while the car is stationary.
- Switch Off Once Clear: As soon as the windscreen is fully demisted and clear, the heated function must be turned off.
- Use Your Blowers: For maintaining a clear screen while driving, use the car's standard air conditioning and blower system directed at the windows, which is perfectly legal and safe.
Police officers have the authority to issue an on-the-spot Fixed Penalty Notice of £100 and three penalty points if they deem your view of the road is compromised. If the matter is taken to court, the fine can escalate to a maximum of £1,000, and you could still receive the points.
