A routine Delta Air Lines flight from Salt Lake City to Atlanta turned into a dramatic mid-air emergency when a flight attendant suffered a serious medical condition, forcing the aircraft to make an unscheduled landing in Albuquerque.
The incident occurred on Tuesday aboard Flight 1283, which departed Salt Lake City International Airport bound for Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. Approximately 90 minutes into the journey, cabin crew members recognised one of their colleagues was experiencing a medical emergency.
Passengers Spring Into Action
As the situation unfolded, the flight crew made an urgent announcement asking if any medical professionals were aboard. Several passengers with medical training immediately responded, rushing to assist the ailing flight attendant.
"The flight attendants were absolutely phenomenal," recounted passenger Kendra Dantes. "They remained incredibly calm and professional throughout the entire ordeal while caring for their colleague."
Emergency Diversion to Albuquerque
The captain made the decision to divert the Boeing 757 to Albuquerque International Sunport, where emergency medical services were standing by. The aircraft landed safely and was met by waiting paramedics who transported the flight attendant to a local hospital.
"Our priority is always the safety and wellbeing of our customers and crew," a Delta spokesperson stated. "We commend our flight crew for their swift response and professionalism in managing this difficult situation."
Extended Ground Delay
Passengers faced a significant delay as the aircraft remained grounded in Albuquerque for approximately five hours while Delta arranged for a replacement crew. The airline provided regular updates and accommodated travellers during the extended wait.
The flight eventually continued to Atlanta, arriving nearly six hours behind schedule. Despite the disruption, many passengers expressed understanding and concern for the flight attendant's condition.
"It's frightening when something like this happens miles above the ground," said another passenger. "But everyone handled it remarkably well. Our thoughts are with the flight attendant for a full recovery."
The condition of the flight attendant remains undisclosed, with Delta citing privacy concerns, though the airline confirmed they are receiving appropriate medical care.
