Victoria Lebrec, now 33, was 24 when a skip lorry knocked her off her bicycle in London on 8 December 2014. The lorry driver failed to check his mirrors for 13 seconds before turning, according to police. Lebrec suffered catastrophic internal bleeding and her left leg was amputated days later.
She was airlifted to Royal London Hospital after a life-saving roadside procedure called resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta (Reboa). She spent three months as an inpatient and required a £70,000 prosthetic leg. Despite the trauma, Lebrec has forgiven the driver and rebuilt her life.
Now an active campaigner for safer roads, Lebrec says she cried a lot but always assumed she would be okay. She continues to advocate for better infrastructure and driver awareness to prevent similar crashes.
