Contactless Train Payments Finally Extended to London's Stansted Airport
Contactless Payments Extended to Stansted Airport After Delay

Train passengers travelling to Stansted Airport in London can now finally use contactless payments on select Greater Anglia routes, marking the end of a frustrating delay that had led to tens of thousands of fines. The new system, which was originally scheduled for introduction on 14 December, has been rolled out nearly three months later than planned, with operations commencing from Sunday, 8 March.

End of a Costly Confusion

Previously, passengers were able to tap their contactless cards at London stations such as Liverpool Street and Tottenham Hale to board trains to Stansted Airport. However, upon arrival at the airport, they were prohibited from tapping out, resulting in automatic fines for incomplete journeys. This issue affected numerous travellers who attempted to use contactless or Oyster cards, highlighting a significant gap in the ticketing infrastructure.

Expansion Across the Network

The extension of contactless ticketing now includes 20 stations across the Greater Anglia network, bringing it in line with the seamless systems seen on the London Underground. Key commuter routes benefiting from this upgrade include services to Southend Victoria, Witham, Southend Airport, Chelmsford, Harlow Town, and Bishop’s Stortford. Additionally, the recently opened Beaulieu Park station in Essex is part of this modernisation effort.

Important Note: While contactless payments are now accepted, Stansted and Southend airports will still not support Oyster cards. Furthermore, not all stations on the Greater Anglia network have been included in this rollout; notable exclusions are Colchester, Newport, and Southminster.

How Contactless Ticketing Works

Contactless ticketing simplifies travel by allowing passengers to pay for individual journeys without pre-purchasing tickets. The system automatically calculates fares based on peak and off-peak times, as well as the specific routes taken. Daily and weekly caps are also applied for journeys into and within London, ensuring cost-effectiveness for regular commuters.

Official Statement from Greater Anglia

Martin Beable, Managing Director of Greater Anglia, expressed satisfaction with the rollout: "We are pleased to confirm that pay-as-you-go contactless ticketing will be introduced at a further 20 stations from 8 March, making travel across our network simpler and more flexible for customers. This extension is a crucial step in modernising railway ticketing, enabling passengers to tap in and out seamlessly while enhancing the overall travel experience for those moving into and out of London."
