One in Five Children Aspire to Be Train Drivers, New Research Reveals
A significant 20% of children dream of becoming train drivers when they grow up, according to a recent study conducted by TransPennine Express (TPE). The research highlights a strong affinity among young people for rail travel, with trains emerging as the preferred mode of transportation for many.
Trains Top the List for Children's Travel Preferences
The survey found that one in five children named trains as their favourite way to travel, surpassing other options such as cars, boats, or buses. Additionally, a quarter of children reported that train journeys excite them more than trips by other means, underscoring the unique appeal of rail travel for the younger generation.
Parents also noted the impact of train travel on family experiences, with 25% stating that journeys beginning by train often become their most memorable family outings. This sentiment is reinforced by children's enjoyment of simple pleasures during train rides.
What Children Love Most About Train Travel
When asked about their favourite aspects of train journeys, children highlighted:
- Looking out of the window as the top activity, offering views of passing landscapes.
- The sense of adventure that comes with exploring new destinations.
- Interactive elements that make the journey engaging and educational.
TransPennine Express Launches Free Children's Activity Book
To celebrate and nurture this enthusiasm for train travel, TPE has introduced a free children's activity book available onboard all its services. The booklet, designed for children aged four to 11, aims to make family journeys more entertaining while educating young travellers about train safety and facts.
Key features of the activity book include:
- Interactive games that introduce children to destinations across the TPE network.
- Educational content on train travel and safety protocols.
- Engaging activities tested by children to ensure they are fun and easy to use.
Parents or children can request the activity book directly from onboard service hosts on all routes, with its release timed perfectly for the Easter holidays.
Additional Initiatives for Junior Travellers
Alongside the activity books, TPE is providing ticket wallets to help junior travellers keep their tickets safe. This initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance the customer experience for families.
Andrew McClements, Customer Experience and Transformation Director at TPE, commented: "We wanted to create something that makes travelling with us even more enjoyable for families, while also helping children learn along the way. The activity book is designed especially for young customers and even road-tested by children to make sure it's fun, engaging and easy to use. It's a great way to introduce important safety messages and the excitement of travelling by train."
This move reflects TPE's commitment to fostering a positive travel experience for all ages, encouraging a lifelong appreciation for rail journeys.
