Liverpool bus skids on ice, crashes into historic Sefton Park pillar
Bus crashes into historic pillar in Liverpool park

A historic landmark in a Liverpool park was struck this morning after a bus skidded on an icy road, as wintry chaos continues to grip the nation.

Early Morning Crash at Sefton Park

An out-of-service Arriva bus slid out of control on Aigburth Drive near Mossley Hill Drive at around 6:05 am on Tuesday, 6th January 2026. The vehicle, which was heading towards Aigburth Road and Aigburth Vale, collided with a marble pillar at the entrance to the city's famed Sefton Park.

Emergency services, including Merseyside Police, rushed to the scene and cordoned off the area. The bus sustained significant damage to its front right-hand side. Police remained at the location until at least 10 am, coordinating with the council to arrange for the vehicle's removal.

No Injuries as Investigation Launched

Fortunately, the bus was not carrying any passengers at the time of the incident, and no injuries were reported. A spokesperson for Arriva Merseyside confirmed the company was investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.

The accident occurred amid treacherous conditions in Liverpool, where heavy overnight rain had turned Monday's lying snow and ice into slush, increasing hazards on the roads.

Nation Braces for Further Winter Disruption

This incident highlights the ongoing travel dangers posed by a severe Arctic blast affecting the UK. The Met Office has issued new weather warnings active through to Friday.

A yellow warning for snow covers large parts of England and Wales from 6 pm on Thursday until midday Friday. Forecasters warn that some areas could see accumulations of up to 20cm, with snow developing over higher ground in South Wales late Thursday before spreading more widely.

Adding to the disruption, strong winds associated with Storm Goretti – named by Meteo France – are expected to hit southwest England. A separate yellow wind warning is in place for Cornwall, Devon and the Isles of Scilly from 3 pm Thursday until just before midnight.

This follows the coldest night of the winter so far, with temperatures plunging to a bone-chilling minus 12.5C on Monday, causing widespread school closures and travel problems across the country.
