A popular UK pier is set to receive a major multi-million-pound revamp before the end of this year. The Victorian structure in Bournemouth will be safeguarded for the future through a £9.6 million repair project scheduled for autumn, with funding from the government's Levelling Up Fund.
Repair Details and Timeline
Work will focus on repairs to the pier's main frame and measures to prevent erosion. The project is expected to extend the pier's lifespan by 25 years. Initially planned for 2024, the project faced delays, including a failed tender process.
Richard Herrett, local council member for destination, leisure and commercial operations, stated in spring: "Subject to tender returns, we hope to start work in the autumn and complete within 18 months."
History and Attractions
The 146-year-old Dorset pier is among the most-visited seaside landmarks in the UK. It sits at the centre of Bournemouth beach, which attracts millions of tourists annually. The pier boasts the world's first pier-to-shore zip wire, an amusement arcade, an award-winning activity centre, and the Key West Restaurant, offering panoramic ocean views.
Visitor Information
Those planning to visit should do so soon, as entry fees are suspended until 2029 as part of a £700,000 investment by Adventure Attractions in partnership with Bournemouth Christchurch and Poole Council to boost footfall.
