Work continues to remove Birkenhead's controversial 'Wotsit Street' road markings, over a week after the expected completion date.
The leader of Wirral Council had previously said the orange and yellow markings on Grange Road West were expected to have been removed by the end of September. However, now a week into October, the widely ridiculed markings remain in place.
Design scrapped after trial
The imaginative redesign of Grange Road West sought to improve the flow of traffic in the area. But after a six-month trial, the council decided to scrap the coloured road markings and street furniture, citing the "significant concern" the design had generated.
In August, the leader of Wirral Council, Cllr Paula Basnett, appeared on BBC Radio Merseyside where she said the street furniture and planters on the road would be removed by the end of August, while the orange and yellow markings were expected to be removed by the end of September.
Markings remain despite planter removal
Despite the street furniture and planters having been relocated within the borough, the coloured markings remain on the street and footpaths.
Around £300,000 was spent on turning the road into 'Wotsit Street'. Money which Cllr Basnett told the BBC was "a waste of money." She added: "It was not appropriate to have street furniture and planters on that particular road."
Resurfacing expected later this month
The council leader said the introduction of traffic calming measures on the road was the right thing to do, arguing the road should be one-way. However she said: "Should it have been orange? Absolutely not."
Preparations on site are continuing and it is expected resurfacing at Grange Road West will take place later this month, depending on other work.
