The BBC has faced viewer complaints just hours into its 2026 Wimbledon coverage after a scheduling clash emerged between the tennis tournament and England's World Cup round-of-32 match. The broadcaster now faces a difficult decision on how to prioritise its programming.
England's World Cup Match Creates Headache
England's football team secured their place in the round of 32 by winning their group, setting up a match against DR Congo on Wednesday at 5pm. The BBC is scheduled to broadcast this fixture, as ITV had rights to two of England's three group stage matches. However, the timing directly conflicts with prime-time Wimbledon matches on the same evening.
Viewer confusion arose when television guides initially showed Wimbledon as the only event on BBC's main channels. One user, @WelsbyElton, posted on X: "I sincerely hope I'm wrong here but as far as I can see England vs DR Congo on Wednesday at 5pm is on BBC iPlayer. The two main channels are showing Wimbledon. It's not ITV's turn to show England. Surely they must alter the schedules. If not it is scandalous."
BBC Responds to Concerns
The BBC quickly addressed the complaint, replying: "Happy to reassure you that this game - and all Round of 32 BBC matches - can be watched on BBC One and/or BBC iPlayer." The confusion likely stemmed from television guides not yet being updated to reflect the schedule changes.
The Wimbledon schedule for Wednesday's second-round matches has not been released, as the tournament began on Monday and runs for two weeks. The BBC will need to adjust its programming to accommodate both events.
Pressure on BBC to Improve Wimbledon Coverage
This year's Wimbledon is particularly significant for the BBC following reports that the All England Club has asked for improved coverage. Failure to meet these expectations could risk the broadcaster losing rights to the prestigious tournament in the future, a prospect the BBC cannot afford.
Wimbledon 2026 coverage continues on BBC One, BBC Two, and BBC iPlayer, with the BBC promising to show all round-of-32 matches involving England on its main channels.
