A British Airways flight bound for the UK was forced to make an unscheduled landing in Lyon, France, after a passenger required urgent medical attention. The aircraft, operating as flight BA78 from Kotoka International Airport in Ghana, departed at 10.25pm local time on Sunday.

While cruising at 38,000 feet, the flight crew transmitted a Squawk 7700 code, the international signal for a general emergency, and diverted to the nearest suitable airport. The Airbus A350-1000 landed safely at Lyon-Saint Exupéry Airport at 5.26am local time on Monday.

The plane remained on the ground for two hours for refueling before continuing its journey to Heathrow Airport. No further details about the passenger's condition have been released.
