Clare Balding addressed BBC cameras to explain why Serena Williams' Wimbledon comeback was not scheduled to continue on Friday. After losing in singles to Maya Joint on Tuesday, Serena was due to play doubles with her sister Venus Williams this week. However, when the order of play for Friday was released, the Williams sisters were curiously omitted. Every other women's doubles match had been scheduled for either Thursday or Friday, and the first round of women's singles typically takes just two days to complete.

After a montage of Serena at SW19, Balding explained: "We expect that they're giving them an extra day; there can be flexibility on this. We will expect to see them, if they are able to play, on the order of play for Saturday." The announcement clarified that the delay was not due to injury or withdrawal, but a scheduling decision allowing the six-time doubles champions additional recovery time.
Impact on Wimbledon Schedule
The decision to postpone the Williams sisters' doubles match reflects the tournament's flexibility in accommodating high-profile players. Serena, a six-time Wimbledon doubles champion, and Venus, a six-time doubles champion, have a combined 14 Wimbledon doubles titles. Their absence from Friday's schedule sparked speculation, but Balding's statement reassured fans that the pair are expected to compete on Saturday.
