British Airways: Carry Prescription Copy to Avoid Airport Delays
BA: Carry Prescription Copy to Avoid Airport Delays

British Airways has issued advice to help passengers avoid delays at airport security and customs. The airline recommends that travellers carry a copy of their prescription for any medication they are bringing, as stated in its baggage FAQ section.

'We recommend you carry a copy of the prescription for your medication to avoid delays at security or customs,' the airline said.

Hand Luggage Essentials

Passengers are advised to pack essential medications for personal use on board and for the first few days of their journey into their smaller under-seat hand baggage. This precaution is recommended in case hold baggage is delayed.

British Airways cautioned against packing medication in larger cabin bags, as these may be requested to be placed in the hold on busy flights. Additional medication for personal use at the destination can be packed in checked baggage, provided enough is carried in hand luggage for a few days.

Liquid Medicine Allowances

For medicines exceeding 100ml, the UK government's Gov.uk website states that passengers are allowed to carry essential medicines of more than 100ml in hand luggage, including liquid dietary foodstuffs and inhalers, if essential for the journey. However, proof that the medication is prescribed is required if it is both in liquid form and in a container larger than 100ml. No proof is needed for tablet form or liquids in containers 100ml or smaller.

Gov.uk also advises that medicine containing a controlled drug must be carried in hand luggage when entering or leaving the UK, and it may be taken away at the border if the passenger cannot prove it was prescribed for them.

Passengers with further questions about baggage and liquid rules should check with their airline and always check the guidance before travel.
