Wetherspoons Unveils Major Spanish Expansion with Dual Barcelona Airport Pubs
British pub chain JD Wetherspoon has revealed ambitious plans to open two additional pubs in Spain, both situated at Josep Tarradellas Barcelona – El Prat airport. This strategic move comes just weeks after the successful launch of its first continental European venue at Alicante Airport in February, marking a significant step in the company's overseas growth strategy.
Strategic Airport Locations and Operational Details
The two new Barcelona airport pubs will be located in separate terminals, with the first scheduled to open at Terminal 1 in September 2026, followed by the second at Terminal 2 in January 2027. Both establishments will be positioned airside, accessible only to passengers who have passed through passport control and are awaiting their flights.
These venues will collectively offer more than 5,700 square feet (530 square metres) of customer space, accommodating nearly 600 patrons. Operating hours will extend from 5am to 11pm daily, with food service available until one hour before closing. The Ibersol Group, a prominent franchised brand operator in Spanish and Portuguese travel sectors, will manage both locations.
Menu Offerings and Design Elements
The Barcelona pubs will feature a familiar Wetherspoon menu, including breakfast dishes, burgers, pizzas, and real ale, alongside select local Spanish specialties. In a nod to the chain's British heritage, both locations will incorporate partially-carpeted areas with unique designs, continuing the tradition of individual carpet patterns found in UK branches.
This approach differs slightly from the Alicante airport pub, which replaced traditional carpeting with Spanish tiles and offers a menu that is approximately 90% similar to UK venues but excludes fish and chips. Price points at airport locations typically exceed those on British high streets, with items like a traditional breakfast priced at €10.25 (£8.94) compared to £5.09 in the UK.

Tim Martin, founder and chairman of JD Wetherspoon, expressed enthusiasm about the expansion, stating, "We are delighted to have secured two fantastic sites at Barcelona airport. In the short time since opening, our pub at Alicante airport has proven popular with travellers, and we are confident we can replicate that success at our two new pubs in Barcelona."
Martin further emphasized the company's broader international ambitions, adding, "We aim to open a number of pubs overseas in the coming months and years, including those at airports. Given the population overseas, there is huge opportunity." This vision aligns with his previous comments about expanding abroad, with airport locations expected to play a key role in this strategy.
Context and Future Prospects
The Spanish expansion represents a notable departure from Wetherspoon's established UK footprint, which comprises nearly 800 pubs. The Alicante venue, targeting holidaymakers returning from Benidorm and the Costa Blanca, has demonstrated the viability of airport-based pubs in continental Europe.
With the Barcelona additions, Wetherspoon strengthens its presence in key Spanish travel hubs, potentially paving the way for further European ventures.
