Wells: Tiny Somerset City Named UK's Best for City Breaks

Wells, a small city in Somerset with a population of around 12,000, has been named one of the best places to visit in the UK on several occasions. It came top in a Which? survey of the country's best city breaks in 2024, scoring 86%.

A Hidden Gem in Somerset

Often called England's smallest city, Wells sits on the edge of the Mendip Hills, around 20 miles from Bristol and Bath. Despite its small size, the city offers plenty of attractions for visitors.

Its most famous landmark is Wells Cathedral, a building dating back to the 12th century. The cathedral is known for its Gothic architecture, medieval sculptures, and unusual scissor arches. Visitors can explore it for £15.50, while those attending a service or visiting to pray can enter for free.

Historic Attractions and Streets

The Bishop's Palace, home to the Bishops of Bath and Wells for more than 800 years, is another key attraction. Surrounded by a moat, it has 14 acres of gardens, historic ruins, and swans. Adult tickets cost £15.

Vicars' Close is believed to be Europe's oldest continuously inhabited residential street, with medieval houses that have barely changed over the centuries. The city also has a traditional High Street with independent shops, bakeries, cafés, and restaurants, plus a market every Wednesday and Saturday selling fresh produce and locally made goods.

Recognition and Visitor Reviews

Wells was also used as a filming location for the British comedy Hot Fuzz, starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. In 2023, it topped a Which? survey of the UK's best inland towns and villages, receiving a score of 83%.

It's definitely a place we would visit again."
