US YouTuber amazed by Conwy's friendly locals

American YouTuber Kalani Ghost Hunter, whose real name is Kalani Smith, visited the historic coastal town of Conwy with his wife Sav and was left in awe by the warmth of the local residents.

A Warm Welcome in Conwy

During their visit, the couple was particularly impressed by the friendliness of the Welsh people. Kalani said: "So we're going to go to the high street, I just had to do a radio interview for BBC here in Wales. I tell you what, the Welsh folks are very friendly, what do you think?"

Sav agreed, adding: "They might be some of the most friendly people I have ever met. Every single person, even if they don't know who we are, they have been so kind, and people are so talkative too. Everybody is willing to have conversation."

Scenery and Speed Limits

Kalani arrived in Conwy by car and was struck by two things during his drive: the breathtaking landscape and the 20mph speed limits. He said: "The scenery on this drive is absolutely beautiful. Wales has been absolutely beautiful so far and we've been to parts of Wales but only the cities really and now we are kind of getting into the countryside and some more of the lesser known spots, at least for Americans anyway."

He also noted that all-day parking in Conwy cost just £6.70, compared to the £40 he had paid previously in Brighton.

Local Highlights

The couple visited L's Coffee and Bookshop after followers recommended it. Sav, who mentioned that the owner came out to greet them, remarked: "That sign there says 'no wifi drink coffee' – I like that." She added: "We are in L's Coffee and I won't go into their entire story of how they got started but a lot of grinding and suffering and just making things work in the beginning but huge thanks to them for having us, this is delicious."

They then walked along the harbour to Castell Conwy (Conwy Castle), part of King Edward I's "Iron Ring" of fortresses built across Wales in the late 13th century. The castle has been recognised by Condé Nast Traveller as one of the "most beautiful" in Europe. After climbing to the top, Sav said: "Ok, so we've made it to the top of the tower here, it is an absolutely beautiful view pretty much all the way around."

Later, the couple visited the award-winning wine, beer and spirit shop Vinomondo for a drink in its beer garden.

Viewer Reactions

After the video of their travels was posted, one person commented: "I am a Yorkshire person – Wales is the best kept secret on the planet." Another said: "North Wales is incredibly beautiful."

A third viewer added: "Thank you for taking the time to break the stereotypes about our small islands, enjoy all of your time here." Another admirer said: "Enjoy your stay in one of the greatest places on earth. Beautiful scenery, a rich and fascinating history, and lovely people with a special language and culture."
