Shoe Bay, a stunning beach on the private island of Eilean Shona in Scotland, features silvery sands reminiscent of Barbados, offering a Caribbean-like escape despite the cooler climate. The beach is part of an exclusive holiday destination where visitors can rent vibrant cottages.
Access and Journey
The secluded island is only reachable by boat. Guests typically drive three hours through the Highlands from Glasgow or take a one-hour trip from Fort William after arriving by sleeper train. At Dorlin Pier, the island's RIB (rigid inflatable boat) collects guests for a five-minute crossing. Upon arrival and departure, a quad and trailer transport luggage and supplies to and from the cottages.
Ownership and Inspiration
Eilean Shona, which served as inspiration for J. M. Barrie's Neverland, is owned by Vanessa Branson, sister of businessman Richard Branson. Vanessa and her former husband, Robert Devereux, purchased the island in 1995, and it now operates as an exclusive holiday destination.
Activities and Amenities
Guests can enjoy lighting campfires, preparing fresh mussels, crabbing, painting, picnicking, or exploring coastal and woodland trails. For more energetic pursuits, the shoreline is ideal for wild swimming, sea kayaking, and paddle boarding. All cottages are a short stroll from Shoe Bay, which is inhabited by seals, sea eagles, sea otters, red squirrels, and pine martens.
The island's former village hall now serves as its social hub, equipped with wi-fi/phone signal, a ping-pong table, reference books, and board games. It also hosts a popular 'pub night' once a week.
