Porthcurno beach in Cornwall has reached 30°C, matching the temperature of Ibiza, as parts of the UK brace for a scorching 40°C this week. The stunning cove, with its turquoise waters and white sand, offers a perfect staycation alternative to the Balearic party island.
Porthcurno: A Slice of Paradise in Cornwall
Porthcurno sits beneath towering cliffs that shield it from the wind, with crystal-clear waters ideal for swimming and snorkeling. Its pure white sand, composed of seashells pounded to powder over millions of years, gives the water a gorgeous turquoise hue. The beach's south-facing direction, flanked by high headlands, provides natural shelter and a near-microclimate, making it a haven even on blustery days.
Attractions and Activities
The renowned open-air Minack Theatre is carved into the cliffs above, offering Shakespeare plays with a sea view. The theatre was the vision of one woman who carved it at the bottom of her garden. Visitors need to book tickets in advance for performances. The best time to visit is mid to low tide, when the beach widens dramatically and a golden sandbar rises out of the sea at nearby Pedn Vounder, creating a shallow lagoon pool visible for around two hours either side of low tide, according to Cornish Secrets and Anywhere We Roam.
Historical Significance
In the late nineteenth century, Porthcurno became the British connection point of the world's first international telegraph cable, stretching to India. During the inter-war period, the cable office briefly became the busiest telegraph station in the world, transmitting up to two million words a day. The Porthcurno Telegraph Museum is located nearby and well worth a visit.
Visitor Information
Driving is the easiest way to reach the beach, with limited public transport. It takes about 25 minutes from Penzance or 45 minutes from St Ives. The car park fills quickly on peak days, so arriving early or late is advised. Dogs are banned from 15 May to 30 September, between 10am and 6pm. RNLI lifeguards patrol from mid-May to the last weekend of September.
