The European Entry/Exit System (EES) has caused significant delays at airports in Spain, Greece, and France this summer, with local media warning of six-hour queues. However, a little-known official app called Travel to Europe can help Brits skip these queues when travelling to Portugal or Sweden.
How the Travel to Europe App Works
The app, available on the App Store and Google Play, allows travellers to pre-register their biometric data—including facial images and fingerprints—up to 72 hours before travel. Users scan their passport's personal details page and chip, take a selfie, and answer questions about their itinerary. Families can add multiple passengers. Once submitted, travellers receive confirmation and can use a dedicated pre-registered lane at the airport.
Impact on Queues
According to user reviews, the app can significantly reduce waiting times. One traveller to Stockholm reported: "I went to Stockholm.... long queues for UK passports. I had already used the app, and used the pre-registered lane. Two people in front of me. The whole process took about three minutes. Very impressed!!" However, another user criticised the limited country support: "Pointless to have an app that supports only one country."
Context of EES and British Tourism
The EES requires all non-EU visitors, including Brits, to provide biometric data on arrival and departure to flag overstays. Brits often face longer queues as they must use non-EU lanes. Portugal welcomed approximately 2.4 million British tourists annually, contributing €5.2 billion to the economy. Spain saw 19 million British visitors in 2025.
Important Caveats
The app does not guarantee border entry, and travellers may still be flagged for additional checks. It is only available for Portugal and Sweden currently, but developers plan to expand to other EU countries.
