Brits warned over Spain's six-drink limit as fines for partying soar

British tourists heading to Spain’s Balearic Islands this summer have been warned they could face hefty fines if they breach strict new rules limiting alcohol consumption, including a six-drink cap at all-inclusive resorts.

The 2024 'Decree for Responsible Tourism' bans street drinking in popular hotspots such as Magaluf and San Antonio, with penalties ranging from €500 to €3,000. Off-licence alcohol sales are also prohibited between 9.30pm and 8am in certain areas.

Simon Hood, executive director of John Mason International, urged holidaymakers to avoid drinking in public and making excessive noise. 'These laws were first introduced in 2024, however, new amendments have recently been proposed that many Brits are unaware of,' he said.

Under the rules, all-inclusive guests are limited to six alcoholic drinks per day, split between lunch and dinner. Hotels can charge extra for breaking the limit. Happy hours and two-for-one promotions have also been banned.

Last year, over 3.5 million Brits visited the islands, but a surge in anti-tourism protests has prompted authorities to crack down on unruly behaviour. Hood advised: 'Have fun, but respect local rules.'
