Around 40 people, including children, were stranded on the Rameses Revenge ride at Chessington World of Adventures for up to 90 minutes after a fault occurred on Sunday evening. Emergency services were called to the Surrey theme park shortly after 5pm, by which time riders had been suspended 20 feet in the air for an hour.
Fire crews from the London Fire Brigade had to cut through harnesses to release those trapped. Justin Coo of the brigade told Sky News that children as young as eight were likely on board, though the ride's minimum height requirement of 1.4 metres meant no younger children were present.
One mother, whose 13-year-old daughter was on the ride, said the electrics failed around 4pm. She reported that staff sent up water and sun cream due to the heat, and that children with learning difficulties were among those brought down first. She expressed concern over the 90-minute wait before fire crews arrived.
Chessington World of Adventures confirmed there were no injuries and apologised for the discomfort experienced. A spokesman stated the attraction would remain open on Monday.
