A wooden bridge measuring just 3.2 metres in length has been dubbed the world's smallest international crossing, linking Spain and Portugal over the Abrilongo River. Those who traverse the structure can cross from one country to another in mere seconds, while their watches change by an entire hour due to the different time zones.
The bridge, known as El Marco in Portugal and La Codosera in Spain, connects the Spanish village of La Codosera in the south to Portugal's El Marco. Originally constructed centuries ago by local residents, it began as basic wooden planks to span the narrow waterway.
In 2008, the bridge was completely remodelled, adding a footbridge and reinforcements to prevent it from being swept away when the river rises. Stone markers bearing 'E' for Spain and 'P' for Portugal were placed on each side to indicate which country one is in when crossing.
The modest crossing highlights the peculiarity of a border bridge that can be crossed in seconds, offering a unique experience for visitors who can hop between two nations almost instantly.
