Ursula's Restaurant in Paddington Announces Final Service Date

The acclaimed Sydney dining establishment Ursula's, located in the vibrant suburb of Paddington, has revealed it will cease operations permanently on Saturday, May 23. This unexpected announcement has generated a significant wave of disappointment and sadness from loyal patrons and prominent members of the Australian hospitality community alike.

Heartfelt Announcement from Chef and Owner Phil Wood

Chef and proprietor Phil Wood, who operates the restaurant alongside his wife Lis Davies, shared the news through a deeply personal message on his social media platforms. "This is not something I ever imagined writing," Wood expressed with evident emotion. He confirmed that the restaurant's lease concludes in late May, prompting this difficult decision. "When our lease expires in late May, we will close Ursula's Paddington," he stated, marking the end of an era for the beloved venue.

A Decorated Yet Challenging Journey

Since its inauguration in 2021, Ursula's has rapidly ascended to become a darling of the Sydney culinary landscape. The restaurant has been consistently honoured in the prestigious Good Food Guide awards, currently holding a coveted two-hat status, a testament to its exceptional quality and innovation. Despite this remarkable success and critical acclaim, Wood elaborated in a comprehensive online letter that escalating financial pressures rendered the closure unavoidable.

"Running a small independent restaurant the way we believe it should be run has become increasingly difficult and, with the lease coming to an end, it felt like the right moment to close this chapter," Wood explained. He emphasised the immense pride he and his team feel for their accomplishments over nearly five years of operation. "When we opened Ursula's, the goal was simple - to create a small independent restaurant generous to its staff and guests, deeply connected to its neighbourhood, and built with care and integrity. I can honestly say, with great pride, that we achieved this."

An Outpouring of Support and Sadness

The formal closure notice posted on Ursula's official Instagram account was swiftly inundated with replies from devastated diners and revered industry figures. Celebrated chef Matt Moran commented, "Sad to hear this legend. But excited to see your next chapter." Former MasterChef judge Melissa Leong reflected on her "special memories and moments" at the venue, adding, "The end of a very heartfelt and chic era. Sydney will be poorer for Ursula's absence."

Renowned chef Peter Gilmore, who recently closed the iconic Quay restaurant, also responded, noting the current challenges within the restaurant sector. "The restaurant business is a tough place at this moment in time. I know whatever you do in the future it will be great, my friend," he wrote. Former patrons expressed their shock and sorrow, with many describing Ursula's as a favourite or the best restaurant in Sydney, and several immediately securing final bookings to bid farewell.

Celebrating a Unique Culinary Legacy

Wood fondly recalled the "uniquely modern Australian" menu served at the Hargrave Street location, and the vibrant, colourful setting designed to inject fun back into fine dining. "We've loved sharing it with Sydney and those of you who visited us from all around the world," he said. In his closing remarks, he extended a warm invitation for one last visit: "If Ursula's has meant something to you, we'd love to welcome you in before our final service. Let's toast to the next ten weeks and give Ursula's the send-off she deserves."

Looking to the Future

While Phil Wood has not disclosed any specific plans for a future restaurant venture, many supporters expressed hope that this closure merely signifies the end of one chapter. "Hoping this is just the end of one chapter before the start of another," one comment read. In the interim, Wood and Davies's other establishment, Cafe Cressida in Woollahra, continues to operate, offering breakfast and lunch in its famously chic pink-decorated setting.
