Suffolk Seaside Town Named Foodie Capital of East England by Which?
Suffolk Town Tops East England Foodie List

Aldeburgh, a charming seaside town in Suffolk, has been crowned the foodie capital of East England by consumer guide Which?, surpassing more famous coastal destinations like Whitstable and Padstow. The accolade comes from a survey of 8,952 experiences from 3,872 Which? members, who awarded Aldeburgh a full five stars for its culinary scene.

Award-Winning Restaurants and Local Produce

Aldeburgh boasts multiple award-winning eateries and an annual festival showcasing Suffolk produce. The Aldeburgh Food and Drink Festival, held at Snape Maltings a few miles inland, returns this year for its 21st anniversary on September 26 and 27. Which? named Snape Maltings the leading regional food destination for 2025.

Fish takes centre stage, as expected for a town overlooking the North Sea. The Aldeburgh Fish and Chip Shop is a beloved spot, identifiable by its queue. For a fine dining experience, the Regatta restaurant specialises in seafood and operates its own smokehouse. Meat lovers can head to The Suffolk, the East Anglian outpost of renowned Soho institution L'Escargot, celebrated for superb meat and fish dishes, albeit at a hefty price.

Michelin Guide Recognition and Critic Praise

This waterside venue features in the Michelin Guide and earned glowing praise from food critic Jay Rayner. "My dinner took me to a whole bunch of very happy places," he wrote in The Guardian.

With a shingle beach and no train station, visitor numbers remain lower than at busier Suffolk hotspots, allowing diners to enjoy meals in a relatively tranquil setting. The Which? survey awarded Aldeburgh five stars for peace and quiet. Public transport requires a connecting bus from Saxmundham station.

Beyond Food: Independent Shops and Coastal Walks

Once you arrive, food is far from the only draw. The town offers an array of independent shops, art galleries, and boutiques to explore between culinary visits. For those seeking activity, countless breathtaking coastal walks provide sweeping vistas of the town's charming and colourful buildings.
