Spain Panic as Tourists Cut Spending in Majorca: Industry Fears Drop

Industry bosses in the Balearic Islands have raised alarm as tourist spending in Majorca declines sharply, with July starting weaker than expected. According to Pedro Fiol, president of the Aviba association of travel agencies in the Balearics, while overall spending statistics may appear higher, rising costs for travel infrastructure — including accommodation and transport — are leaving visitors with less money to spend on bars, restaurants, shops, and excursions.

Restaurants and Transport Hit Hard

Juanmi Ferrer, president of the CAEB Restaurants Association, reported that increasing food prices are compounding the problem. He told the Majorca Daily Bulletin: “July started off weaker than expected. The average bill has decreased, as has the number of meals served.” The trend is echoed in transport, with Rafel Riog, president of the transport federation, stating that “July is proving to be quite bad” and that holidaymakers are staying on the island for fewer days.

Shorter Stays and Falling Spending

The data indicates that tourists are booking shorter hotel stays and reducing their in-destination expenditure. Industry leaders predict the downturn will persist through July and August, affecting key sectors including hotels, hospitality, and transport. The Balearic Islands, a perennial favourite for British holidaymakers, are now facing a potential slump in the peak season.
