K-pop Star Soobin's Taxi Fare Dispute Sparks Philippine Regulatory Action

A taxi driver in the Philippines has been suspended after allegedly attempting to overcharge K-pop star Soobin, the leader of the popular group TXT. The incident came to light last week when TXT posted a vlog on YouTube titled "Soobin's super fun and super tiring vacation," documenting his recent trip to Cebu. Soobin, whose real name is Choi Soo Bin, leads the five-member group formed by Big Hit Music in 2019, which has built a steady international fanbase since debuting that year.

Viral Video Exposes Overcharging Attempt

In the vlog, Soobin explains that after arriving in Cebu, he researched the fare from the city airport to his accommodation and found it should be around 300 Philippine pesos (£3.76). However, at the airport taxi stand, a driver quoted a fare of 500 pesos (£6.27). Soobin, filming the encounter, joked with his friend about the higher fare, mentioning he had asked bandmate Taehyun for advice and was told to "just start acting angry" if overcharged.

During the journey, the driver claimed "gas is very expensive" as justification, then hiked the fare again to 1,000 pesos (£12.5). Soobin addressed viewers, saying, "Did you hear that? I'm reporting this. You heard that, right? I mean, P500 is already pushing it, and then he raises it to P1000." Ultimately, Soobin and his friend refused to pay the higher amount and settled on 500 pesos, but after exiting, Soobin alleged the driver tried to charge 1,000 pesos again, prompting him to express disbelief at the sudden price increase.

Philippine Authorities Respond Swiftly

The video quickly spread online, drawing criticism from Filipino commenters who apologised for the driver's actions. Philippine authorities moved swiftly, with the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board issuing a show cause notice to the taxi operator on Friday. The board stated Soobin had been "victimised by alleged flagrant violations of overcharging and deliberate non-use of the taxi meter." It ordered the operator to submit a written explanation within five days, warning that disciplinary action could include suspension or cancellation of its Certificate of Public Convenience franchise.

Additionally, the board imposed a 30-day preventive suspension on the taxi involved and ordered the operator to surrender the vehicle's licence plate and the driver's licence. Board chairperson Atty Vigor D Mendoza II emphasised the seriousness of the offense, stating, "This is a serious offense especially that this incident puts the name of our country in bad light in the international community. The viral video itself is already strong evidence."

Potential Criminal Charges and Further Penalties

The regulator's initial investigation found the driver had failed to use the fare meter. It is now considering additional penalties, including criminal charges, licence revocation, and vehicle seizure, depending on the investigation's outcome. Mendoza indicated that criminal charges could be pursued against both the driver and the operator for alleged violations of the Public Service Act or fraud. He declared, "Enough is enough. If they do not want to stop, starting today, we will also be filing a criminal case against the driver and operator. The vehicle will also be impounded, pending trial."

This incident highlights ongoing issues with taxi services in tourist areas and the power of social media in holding individuals accountable. Soobin's experience has not only sparked regulatory action but also raised awareness about consumer rights and fair pricing practices in the Philippines.
