England World Cup fans have a unique accommodation option this week: sleeping in the bed of TV icon JR Ewing at the legendary Southfork Ranch. The ranch, which served as the iconic set for the hit series 'Dallas,' is located near the stadium hosting England's first World Cup match.
Exclusive Bedroom Experience
JR Ewing's bedroom is available for $1,978 (£1,475) per night, a price chosen to commemorate the year the show first aired in 1978. Guests can immerse themselves in the world of 'Dallas' while being close to the action of the World Cup.
Operations manager LuCretia Buckett revealed that fans from across England have already visited. A couple flew from London, stayed the night, and returned the next morning. 'That’s dedication to Dallas for you,' she said.
History of Southfork Ranch
The ranch was the primary filming location for 'Dallas' from 1979 to 1989. Larry Hagman, who played JR Ewing, frequently visited unannounced, often buying souvenirs. Buckett noted that the interest from England remains huge, especially during the World Cup.
Buckett grew up nearby and recalled the ranch before it became famous. When JR was shot in 1980, over 21.5 million Brits watched the episode—more than half the population at the time. Fans left flowers and letters at the ranch, with her grandmother often reminding them, 'It’s a TV series—it’s NOT real.'
Behind-the-Scenes Insights
Filming at the ranch came with challenges. Directors originally chose the location after spotting it from a helicopter. The owner reluctantly agreed but only allowed filming during the hottest months of June, July, and August. Actors sometimes wore fur coats in scorching heat, with fake rain and snow used for scenes. In one instance, actresses Sue Ellen and Miss Ellie got their heels stuck in melted asphalt.
Buckett believes JR Ewing would have embraced the World Cup excitement. 'There’s no way having such a huge event, and a chance to make money on his doorstep, that he wouldn’t have seen opportunities,' she said.
England begins their World Cup campaign in Dallas on Wednesday against Croatia, before traveling to Boston and New York.
