Brit Mum Wakes from Coma After Falling Ill at Tenerife Airport

A British mother who was fighting for her life in a Spanish hospital after collapsing at Tenerife Airport has woken from an induced coma, her family has confirmed.

Jade Bird, 33, a carer from Abergele, was preparing to fly home from the island last Wednesday when she suddenly became unwell. She was rushed to hospital, where doctors discovered a brain infection that had developed into meningitis.

Her sister-in-law, Victoria, who travelled to Spain to be at her bedside, said Jade had complained of an earache and vomiting before the incident. At the airport, she was unable to communicate and screaming in pain. Medics placed her on a ventilator in an intensive care unit in northern Tenerife.

In a GoFundMe update, relatives said Jade is now 'much more alert and aware of her surroundings' but remains hospitalised. She will be transferred to a neurological ward for assessment and is expected to need continued IV antibiotics before being fit to travel home.

The family has been quoted £46,000 for a medical evacuation back to Britain, despite insisting Jade has proper insurance cover. A fundraising campaign has raised over £12,000 so far. Victoria said: 'It's been absolutely heart-breaking telling her daughter that she's unable to see mummy.'
