Royal Ascot revellers are gearing up for a spectacular week as a new study reveals the legendary meeting is now worth a staggering £264.5 million to the British economy each year.
Economic Impact
The five-day event, which begins on Tuesday, June 16, has become one of the UK's biggest sporting and social occasions. The study found that the Berkshire showpiece supports nearly 4,000 jobs and delivers significant benefits to hotels, restaurants, transport companies, retailers, and other businesses.
Professor James Reade of Reading University said: "The evidence demonstrates that Ascot functions not only as a racecourse, but as a nationally significant economic asset, an international ambassador for British heritage and culture, and an important contributor to community wellbeing."
Global Reach
Last year, visitors from 76 countries attended the meeting, with overseas racegoers spending almost £50 million on hotels, restaurants, transport, and shopping. Ticket buyers came from nearly three-quarters of all UK postcodes, highlighting Ascot's widespread appeal.
Royal Ascot is broadcast into more than 180 territories worldwide and reaches an estimated 580 million households, placing its global audience alongside major events such as Wimbledon, The Open Championship, and the Grand National.
Community and Charity
The report also highlighted Ascot's charitable work. Its community programme supports more than 7,000 people and generates over £700,000 of social value every year.
Racing Highlights
This year's meeting will feature powerhouse yards including Aidan O'Brien, Charlie Appleby, and the Gosden operation. Early ante-post discussion has highlighted horses such as Talk Of New York for the St James's Palace Stakes, while Gold Cup prospects including Al Nayyir are already being debated.
Among the jockeys, Ryan Moore enters with a formidable Royal Ascot record, while Oisin Murphy, James Doyle, and William Buick are expected to dominate the biggest races. Buick continues to boast an enviable strike rate on market leaders at the meeting.
