Romeo Napoli, a five-star design hotel in Naples' gritty cruise port, embodies the city's energising chaos with volcano views, Michelin-starred dining, and a new rooftop pool. The hotel, redeveloped from the Lauro shipping headquarters by architect Kenzō Tange and opened in 2008, features an open-plan ground floor gallery with works from Marc Chagall to vintage Hermès picnic chairs, all tied together by depictions of Mount Vesuvius by artists like Andy Warhol and Francesco Clemente.
Rooms and Views
The best of the 77 rooms and suites, on upper floors, offer volcano views that enhance interiors of statement striped wood and slatted blinds. Though decor is slightly naff but charming, beds are heavenly. Rooms on the other side have less appealing outlooks and some are compact, ideal for guests who plan to explore. A Grand Suite with harbour view is available.
Dining and Amenities
Breakfast is served in the Michelin-starred ninth-floor Alain Ducasse restaurant with Gulf of Naples views, offering pristine white tablecloths and dishes like granola with wild strawberries and smoked salmon with blinis. The hotel has a huge subterranean Sisley spa and gym, and a new rooftop pool with a Krug bar and terrace offering views of Vesuvius and Capri. Dinner at Il Ristorante Alain Ducasse features Campania ingredients with French flair; memorable dishes include potato focaccia, fresh tomato fusilli casarecci, and lamb with green herbs. The warm team prevents stuffiness, and the hum of Naples is audible nine floors below.
Prices from around £500 per night.
