Passport holders across the United Kingdom have been issued an urgent warning to take immediate action or risk being turned away at airports when attempting to travel to European Union destinations. Failure to comply with specific passport validity rules could prevent travellers from boarding flights, disrupting holiday plans and causing significant inconvenience.
Critical Passport Checks Required Before Travel
With summer holidays approaching and travel plans being finalised, passport holders must pay urgent attention to their travel documents. The guidance has been highlighted by travel expert Kylie, known as englandandeverywhere on TikTok, who regularly shares essential travel tips with her substantial following. In a recent video, she focused specifically on passport requirements, issuing a crucial warning about rules that could unexpectedly catch travellers unprepared.
The EU's Dual Passport Requirements
Kylie explained the European Union's specific entry requirements for non-EU nationals: "This is your annual reminder that, if you still have a red passport and you renewed it before October 2018, you may have been issued a passport that's valid for longer than 10 years. If you plan on going to the EU, you may have to check that it's actually valid for travel."
The EU maintains two distinct requirements for passport validity. First, the passport must have been issued within the last 10 years from the date of entry. Second, it must have at least three months of validity remaining beyond the intended departure date from the EU.
Kylie provided a concrete example: "If we look at the dates in my old passport, it was issued in September 2015, and it has an expiry date of June 2026. So, if we take the three months from June 2026, that means it comes out to about March 2026, which is still a month away. However, with the issue date being September 2015, I couldn't actually enter the EU on this passport from September last year."
Global Passport Requirements Vary Widely
While the European Union maintains these specific requirements, other countries worldwide have different passport validity rules. Kylie emphasised: "Now this is only an EU requirement. A lot of other countries around the world don't care about the issue date, and only go from the expiry date. However, every country has different requirements."
She provided examples of varying international requirements: "For instance, Turkey requires 150 days of validity from the expiry date, while destinations like Thailand demand six months of remaining validity. It's always good to get into the habit of checking Gov.uk before you travel anywhere. The website provides comprehensive information about specific passport requirements for each destination."
Official Guidance from European Authorities
The Your Europe website, which provides official guidance for travellers, states clearly: "If you are a national from a country outside the EU wishing to visit or travel within the EU, you will need a valid passport and possibly a visa. Your passport should be valid for at least three months after the date you intend to leave the EU, and it must have been issued within the last 10 years."
The guidance continues: "This means your travel document must have been issued within the previous 10 years the day you enter the EU on condition that it is valid until the end of your stay, plus an additional three months. Children and minors must have their own passport and visa, if required."
Why Immediate Action Is Essential
Kylie stressed the importance of checking passport issue dates regardless of travel destination. She noted that people might need to verify their old passports for more than two additional years due to these requirements. The travel expert warned: "Nobody wants to go to the airport only to be turned away, so it's a task worth completing. It's vital people act now to avoid disappointment further down the line."
This passport advice follows other recent travel guidance shared with travellers. Several weeks ago, passengers were encouraged to conduct another important passport check, highlighting the ongoing need for vigilance regarding travel documentation.
With the European Union implementing new entry systems, checking official government websites for the latest requirements becomes increasingly important. Kylie concluded: "Especially with the EU, with their entry systems coming up, it will give you all the information on there as to when those come into effect."
Travellers planning European holidays this summer are strongly advised to examine their passports immediately, checking both the issue date and expiry date against destination requirements. Those with passports issued before October 2018 should pay particular attention, as they may have documents valid for longer than ten years that could cause issues at EU border controls.
