A passenger on a fully booked eight-hour international flight thought they were about to score an upgrade after agreeing to swap seats with a dad who wanted to sit with his family. But the request took an unexpected turn when the dad revealed a sneaky plan.
The traveller, sharing the story on Reddit, was seated in an aisle seat in economy. A couple arrived with their toddler, already upset. The wife and child sat in the middle row next to the passenger, while the dad stood in the aisle looking flustered. He asked if the passenger would swap seats so he could be with his family.
The Business Class Offer
Despite initial hesitation, the passenger asked where his seat was. The dad revealed it was in business class. "Of course I said absolutely," the passenger recalled. But just as they stood up to collect their belongings, the dad changed his story.
"Wait, my wife actually wanted to go sit up there. Can you take her seat instead?" he asked. Instead of moving into business class, the passenger realised they were being asked to swap their aisle seat for a middle seat next to the screaming toddler.
Refusal and Confrontation
"I said no. I'm not switching to the middle row and being blocked into a middle seat by a screaming toddler," they said. "I thought you wanted to sit with your family?"
The dad became angry and accused the passenger of going back on the agreement, arguing his wife had planned to enjoy his business class seat instead. The exchange delayed other passengers from boarding.
Trying to lighten the mood, the traveller asked the man whether he had "any extra of whatever drugs he was on" because they couldn't believe he expected someone to agree to the swap.
Flight Attendant Intervention
A flight attendant arrived to find out what was causing the hold-up. The man immediately told the crew member that the passenger had agreed to take his wife's seat before refusing to cooperate. Another passenger nearby stepped in to explain what had actually happened.
After checking the man's boarding pass, the flight attendant asked the traveller to collect their luggage before personally escorting them to the business class seat.
"Needless to say I had a very nice flight after that," the passenger added.
Commenting on their post, one user said: "Definitely your proudest moment of being justified and taking his business class seat." Another user added: "Wow. Flight attendant gave you his business class seat that he paid for? Usually they just say 'sit in the seat you were assigned'."
