Just a short train ride from London, Norwich is a historic city that locals say is often forgotten but is now gaining recognition as a cool destination. Under two hours by direct train from the capital, and an hour from Cambridge, it offers a blend of medieval charm and a thriving independent scene.
The city, dubbed the 'City of Stories', features cobbled streets, timber-framed buildings, a 900-year-old outdoor market, and around 500 independent businesses. Despite its attractions, residents note it is frequently bypassed due to its East Anglian location. Karen Williams, owner of For the Love of Norfolk, said: 'We are a bit out on a limb, and we do get bypassed a lot.'
Norwich was recently named the best place to live in the UK for 2026 by The Sunday Times. Leanne Fridd, owner of Bookbugs and Dragon Tales, remarked: 'It wasn't cool growing up, but it's become cool... I'm incredibly proud of Norwich.' Highlights include the Norwich Lanes, with over 300 independent shops, and the iconic outdoor market, one of the oldest and largest in the UK.
Visitors can explore Elm Hill, a medieval street, the 12th-century Norman castle, two cathedrals, and vibrant street art. Karen Williams added: 'We're so close to the coast, and we've got the Broads National Park... Norwich itself is quite compact, so we've got everything here within a 10-minute walk.'
