The eagerly anticipated shortlist for The National Fish & Chip Awards 2026 has been unveiled this week, showcasing the top ten takeaway fish and chip shops across Britain. The winner will be crowned victorious at a ceremony tonight, marking the pinnacle of excellence in the beloved British chippy industry.
Geographic Spread of Finalists
This year's shortlist spans the length and breadth of the United Kingdom, highlighting regional culinary prowess. Yorkshire boasts the most nominations with four establishments, closely followed by Scotland with two. London, Oxford, Essex, and Durham each have one shop represented, ensuring a diverse geographic mix that reflects the nationwide passion for fish and chips.
Rigorous Judging Process
Organised by the National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF), the awards have been a cornerstone event since 1988, with 14 categories including Takeaway of the Year, Restaurant of the Year, Drywite Young Fish Frier of the Year, and the all-new Menu Innovation award. According to organisers, the awards are 'by the industry for the industry,' designed to acknowledge outstanding businesses and individuals serving this iconic dish.
Hundreds of entries are submitted annually, with a panel of fish-frying experts selecting an initial top 40 through a rigorous process. Entries are evaluated on skill, taste, operational and environmental sustainability, product quality, training and development, and customer service. Judges then conduct interviews and assessments to narrow the list to the top ten, followed by 'mystery visits' to determine the overall winner.
Industry Recognition and Standards
Andrew Crook, president of the NFFF, emphasised the awards' role in celebrating expertise: 'Each category has been carefully designed to recognise the skill, dedication, and expertise of talents running successful fish and chip shops. Our judging process is robust and comprehensive, covering sustainability, quality, training, and service. Finalists are assessed through interviews, skills tasks, and anonymous taste tests to uphold gold standards.'
He added, 'The 2026 finalists represent the very best in the industry, with hard work and precision craftsmanship at their core. We look forward to celebrating these independent businesses at the heart of our communities, encouraging everyone to support their local chippy and keep this legacy thriving.'
