Brits Use Loyalty Points to Fund Multiple Dream Holidays, Survey Reveals
Loyalty Points Fund Multiple Dream Holidays for Brits

Loyalty Points Transform Holiday Accessibility for British Travellers

British holidaymakers are increasingly turning to loyalty points to fund multiple dream vacations, with seven in ten now using reward schemes to access destinations and accommodations that were previously considered unaffordable. According to a comprehensive survey of 2,000 adults, the typical Brit has already experienced three 'holidays of a lifetime', challenging the traditional notion that such trips are rare, once-in-a-lifetime events.

Survey Highlights Changing Travel Priorities

The research, conducted by Virgin Red as part of its fourth annual Points Index report titled 'Living the Dream Holiday', reveals a significant shift in how the nation values loyalty points. An impressive 46% of respondents believe that dream getaways are more attainable today than they were a decade ago, thanks in large part to strategic use of reward schemes.

When defining what constitutes a holiday of a lifetime, breathtaking natural landscapes emerged as the top factor for 50% of participants, followed closely by luxury accommodation at 45%. Other crucial components include outstanding food and drink (40%) and cultural experiences exclusive to the destination (38%).

Financial Savvy Drives Travel Dreams

The data shows that a savvy 71% of Brits are leveraging loyalty points to book trips that would otherwise be outside their budget. This trend is supported by Virgin Red's figures, which indicate that in 2025 alone, adults redeemed 31.2 billion points across the company's travel offerings, marking a substantial 13% year-on-year increase.

Further analysis reveals that point-spending surges occur most prominently in May and July, with the highest peak observed in September. This pattern potentially coincides with back-to-school fatigue, suggesting that families are using points to plan post-summer escapes. Additionally, 21% of respondents indicated they would arrange a major trip to celebrate a milestone birthday, highlighting the personal significance attached to these journeys.

Practical Applications of Loyalty Points

Among survey participants, nearly three quarters (74%) have covered either some or the entire cost of a flight using loyalty points, while 29% have utilised points to upgrade their flights for enhanced comfort and luxury. Currently, a third (34%) of Brits are actively planning a major holiday, with 39% favouring beach and relaxation breaks overseas. Only 19% are opting for shorter escapes, underscoring a preference for extended, immersive experiences.

Expert Insights on the Loyalty Revolution

Andrea Burchett, chief loyalty officer at Virgin Red, commented on the findings, stating: 'Loyalty is fundamentally reshaping how consumers think about travel. Trips once seen as 'once in a lifetime' are becoming achievable, as consumers increasingly treat points as a strategic currency. Even amid economic uncertainty, points are helping consumers prioritise meaningful travel, loyalty is helping make it possible.'
