A nervous corgi that ran away during a storm in its Northern California hometown was found 2,000 miles away near Chicago.
Opie from Bieber, California, went missing in July and was found two months later in Illinois. He was brought to DuPage County Animal Services, where staff scanned his microchip and traced it back to California.
Laura Flamion, an administrator at DuPage County Animal Services, said Opie, a five-year-old corgi shepherd mix, was found on September 28 and turned in to police as a lost pet. The owner, who did not believe the news at first, quickly arranged to fly Opie home.
The owner believes Opie ran away during a storm and tracked him as far as a local gas station. Flamion suspects someone took Opie, as he was wearing a collar with a different name.
DuPage County Animal Services emphasised the importance of microchips, stating: 'We'll never know exactly how Opie made his way nearly across the country, but we do know this: microchips work.'
