Liverpool Should Unashamedly Welcome New Beatles Attraction
Liverpool Should Welcome New Beatles Attraction

Liverpool should be unashamed and uncynical in supporting the new Beatles Story attraction, which will provide a fitting long-term use for St John's Beacon and boost the city's visitor economy, writes Liam Thorp.

New Attraction Announced for St John's Beacon

Apple Corps, the brand created by the Beatles, will develop a huge new state-of-the-art Beatles Story attraction in the centre of Liverpool. The new venue will be the first ever official Beatles experience, backed by Paul and Ringo, and will transform the former Radio City Tower and St John's Market site.

Liverpool City Region mayor Steve Rotheram has been working behind the scenes on the plans for months with Apple, the combined authority, the city council and other key players.

Tourism Remains the Lifeblood of Liverpool's Economy

The Liverpool City Region's visitor economy grew to a record £6.834 billion in 2025, with visitor spending increasing by 9.3% to its highest ever level. Visitor numbers rose by 7.8% to more than 61.5 million, and tourism now supports 57,591 jobs across the city region.

While Liverpool is making progress in emerging sectors such as life sciences, advanced manufacturing and artificial intelligence, the visitor economy remains the top contributor. The new attraction is expected to add to this, with the multi-million pound development bringing investment, regeneration and jobs.

Responding to the Critics

Some social media users have criticised the plans, with one commenter saying: "The Beatles again? Liverpool is like a theme park." Another compared the city to Blackpool, and another added: "Show some real ambition and get the economy growing."

However, the current Beatles Story on the Albert Dock, opened in 1990, has been a key part of Liverpool's tourism for over three decades, and the city has lacked a marquee attraction for its greatest cultural asset. The new venue will take that legacy to a new level.
