A new study by Ferrygogo has identified Kosovo as the most affordable European country for a three-course meal for two, with an average cost of just €20 (£17.35). The analysis examined mid-range restaurant prices across the continent, excluding drinks, and found that the small Balkan nation offers the best value for diners.
Kosovo, often referred to as 'Europe’s newest country,' is a landlocked nation bordered by Albania, Montenegro, Serbia, and North Macedonia. Despite its inland location, the city of Prizren is noted for its Mediterranean feel, with red-tiled roofs and cobblestone streets. Other attractions include the Grand Bazaar in Gjakova, one of the oldest in the Balkans, and the 18th-century Terzi Bridge, a fine example of Ottoman engineering.
Other affordable destinations in Southeast Europe include North Macedonia, where a meal for two costs €24.38 (£21.15), and Moldova at €30.32 (£26.30). Serbia, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Romania, and Albania also ranked as budget-friendly options. At the other end of the scale, Switzerland was the most expensive, with an average meal costing €107.24 (£93.04), followed by Denmark, Luxembourg, and Norway. The average price in the UK was approximately £65 (€74.92).
Kosovo uses the euro despite not being an EU member, which simplifies transactions for many travellers. The country is described as safe, affordable, and a hidden gem, offering Ottoman architecture, mountain trails, and a vibrant coffee culture.
